Southwest Airlines is now testing a variety of environmental friendly materials on a refurbished “green plane” that could result is major savings for the company. The materials could result in about $10.3 million in fuel costs if the concept is rolled out fleet wide.

The Boeing 737-700 plane typically costs about $40 million before it was refurbished to be “green”. The environmentally friendly products will placed in various portions of the cabin such as the carpet, seat covers, and life vest pouches. The products will save about 5 pounds per seat, totally a 472 pound weight loss in the entire plane.  The lighter the plane the greater the loss in fuel costs.

The materials will be tested for six months to ensure how they will hold up and to gage the response from costumers. At the present time the company is unsure how long it will be until these eco-friendly materials are added to the entire Southwest fleet.
