Beware of PayPal spear phishing scams. If you receive an email verifying your information regarding a purchase, it could be a scam. Legitimate businesses do not send e-mails claiming problems with an order or an account to lure the “buyer” into revealing financial information. Just recently
, the owner of PA’s Newtown Video has received calls and emails from consumers who got a phishing email. A scammer hijacked Newtown Video’s business name to send bogus purchase “confirmations” to consumers to con them into giving up their PayPal information.
If you receive such an email, call the contact number on the Web site where the purchase was made to confirm that there really is a problem with the transaction. Although the links appear to be at PayPal this is simply masking the actual location and is likely an attempt to gain your PayPal passwords and charge account numbers if you respond.
