|What is the US-EU Safe Harbor Framework? |
The European Commission's Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data from countries in the European Union to destinations, including the United States, that do not meet the European "adequacy" standard for privacy protection. The US Department of Commerce - in consultation with the European Commission and the Swiss Data Protection Commissioner – has developed a "Safe Harbor" framework to allow U.S. businesses to receive and process personal data from the EU countries and Switzerland provided that they put in place certain privacy protections.
Many companies participating in the Safe Harbor framework have chosen the dispute resolution program operated by BBB to help resolve issues that arise with consumers. This program, BBB EU Safe Harbor, provides free privacy dispute resolution services for eligible complaints about BBB EU Safe Harbor Participating Businesses.
