In effort to encourage identity theft prevention, BBB hosted its National Secure Your ID Day on April 16. Nearly 13,000 vehicles filled with personal documents descended on 53 sites across the U.S for free shredding. BBB helped consumers and small businesses from 20 states properly dispose more than 900,800 lbs (450.4 tons) of sensitive information.

Locally, 1,200 Marylanders joined your BBB at Arundel Mills Marketplace in Hanover and The Avenue in White Marsh. Shredded documents totaled 48,000 lbs. After the event, all participants drove away with goody bags stuffed with BBB identity protection tips.

The next National Secure Your ID Day is scheduled for April 21, 2012, while BBB | Greater Maryland has a similar event planned for the eastern shore on October 21, 2011.
