The Small Business Administration is cautioning businesses that the federal government is not and will not be sending e-mail notifications regarding tax rebates.
BBB President & CEO, Angie Barnett, adds, “The government will never contact a tax payer or business owner via e-mail and request bank account information. Phishing scams commonly try to convince their targets they are acting in an official capacity, such as your banker, government agency, even your BBB. But they are only trying to get your personally identifying information, which may include your account numbers and social security number.”
Do not be fooled, warns the SBA. The fraudulent e-mail was reportedly issued with a logo appearing to belong to the agency. If you have received a suspicious e-mail, you are asked to contact the SBA Office of Inspector General at OIGHotline@sba.gov or call 800-767-0385.
